Quick Commerce · Chutney & the fresh portfolio · ITC

You are winning fresh chutney.
That is the problem.

Aashirvaad is already the largest fresh wet chutney brand on quick commerce — ahead of iD Fresh. The category it leads is roughly one six-thousandth the size of the fresh bakery shelf sitting next to it, and the accompaniment occasion that is selling belongs to a dry podi.

The category, honestly sized

Chutney on quick commerce is not a small category with room to grow. It is a rounding error on the condiment shelf, and the fresh wet slice is a rounding error inside that.

Relative offtake value across the captured panel, indexed to the fresh wet chutney shelf. Bars are log-scaled — each equal step is a ten-fold difference — because a linear scale renders six of the seven invisible.

Reconciling the ₹6.5 Cr The pan-India number in circulation cannot be a quick-commerce fresh-chutney number. On the QC panel, every fresh wet chutney SKU from every brand combined — Aashirvaad, iD, Khetika, Noice — is about 1/75th of the pickle shelf. A ₹1.5–2 Cr fresh chutney business is a general-trade and modern-trade number that quick commerce is not currently carrying.

Aashirvaad already leads the fresh shelf

The brief assumed a gap to close against iD Fresh. In fresh wet chutney there isn't one — the gap runs the other way.

Aashirvaad turns roughly six times faster per store than iD's chutney, at a lower price. iD does not carry a struck-through list price on its main platform, so its discount is not comparable.
What 99.9% in stock means A short-shelf-life product that never runs out anywhere is not supply-constrained. Noice, the only accompaniment that actually sells, is the only one that goes out of stock — at 87%. Availability is not the binding constraint on this shelf; demand is.
03

The lead is real, and it is narrowing

Month on month, Aashirvaad's fresh chutney is flat and iD's is compounding. The category underneath both is not moving at all.

What moved underneath

  • Instamart store count went 75 → 66, and rate of sale fell with it — the growth in units did not come from either.
  • Blinkit is completely static: same five SKUs, same six cities, same rate of sale, two months running.
  • Zepto has effectively lapsed — from six SKUs across 34 stores to one SKU in one store.
  • Attach against Aashirvaad's own bread is unchanged at ~1 chutney unit per 100 bread units.
The shape of the two curves A 65% share that grows 8% while the challenger grows 244% is a lead with a date on it. iD is not taking the category from ITC — it is growing into a category that is not growing, which is the same outcome arriving more slowly.
04

Everybody is distributed. Nobody sells.

Fresh wet chutney has already won the shelf-space argument on quick commerce. It lost the rate-of-sale argument.

Stores carrying the brand's chutney, as a share of that city's captured store base.

iD's chutney sits in 99% of Bangalore stores and sells four units across three hundred of them. Khetika holds 341 stores and sold three units. The shelf is not the scarce resource.

The listing is wider than the supply chain On Instamart, Aashirvaad chutney is listed in 119 cities. Outside the top seven metros that is 114 cities, 318 stores and 0.45 units per store — against 0.91 in the metros. A quarter of the units come from three-quarters of the geography, at half the productivity. The Bengaluru-only mental model is already out of date; the depth model has not caught up with it.
05

The anchor ITC already owns

iD is not a chutney company. Chutney is 0.2% of its captured business; Indian breads are 99%. It sells chutney because it owns the plate the chutney goes on. ITC owns the second-largest position on that same plate and is not using it.

iD leads seven of eleven terms, including every batter and bread term, without buying a single slot.
The word ITC is not winning is its own Aashirvaad's entire proposition is fresh, no preservatives. On the term "fresh chutney" it holds 1% of Bengaluru's top-12 against iD's 53–60%. It also does not appear at all on "sambar" — because the Blinkit catalogue carries no Aashirvaad sambar SKU, and the Blinkit chutney titles drop the word "Fresh" that Instamart and Zepto both carry.

Outside Bengaluru the brand is not in the top twelve on any of the eleven terms. Chennai and Hyderabad show 0% on every one.

07

The competitor is the platform, not iD

Noice is Swiggy's own label — 200+ SKUs across 13 categories, built on 40-plus partner kitchens, live in six metros. It is the only operator building the same fresh network ITC is building, and it owns the shelf it sits on.

Where a chilled, short-shelf-life network can actually sell. Packaged ambient cookies — half the bakery aisle — are excluded.
The pattern Every segment where the platform label has built share is a segment ITC is absent from. Noice holds 65% of chutney, 15% of dips, 11% of bread and 4% of fresh bakery. ITC holds 0.1% of fresh bakery and 0% of bread — the two segments that are 95% of the entire fresh opportunity — while leading the one that is 3.5% of it.

Noice also carries a chutney variety pack and iD a pack-of-two. Aashirvaad's fresh range is five single-flavour packs at one price point and, on Blinkit, no sambar — the narrowest trial and repeat ladder of the three.

Where the fresh receptivity actually is

Bangalore is not the biggest chutney market. It is the most fresh-receptive one — which is a different and more useful fact.

What the data says the question is

The brief asked how to close a gap against iD in Bengaluru fresh chutney. On the evidence, that gap is already closed and the questions underneath it are different ones.

Not a share question
65%
of fresh wet chutney is already Aashirvaad's. The constraint is the size of the format, not the split of it.
A format question
20×
the rate of sale sits in dry podi, not wet chutney. The occasion is being won ambient.
An attach question
1.2
chutney units per 100 Aashirvaad bread units — with the bread already in 420 Delhi stores.
A portfolio question
95%
of the fresh-DC opportunity is bakery and bread, where ITC holds 0.1% and 0%.
The uncomfortable read A new chilled supply chain was built and pointed at the smallest segment it can serve. The same network reaches a fresh bakery and bread opportunity 6,600 times larger, in which Sunfeast — a brand with a 40-day fresh cookie range and 60 kitchens behind it — currently holds 0.13%.
